Tastes of Terror – October 22

October 22: Piranah Punch

This is quite possibly the most involved cocktail in this book. If you don’t feel like this much effort, simply omit the fish eggs and just have fish in your yellow pond.

Taste profile: tart, sour drink. Garnishes- sweet.

Fish Eggs (makes 8 Servings):

  • ½ cup small tapioca pearls (found in the baking aisle of most grocery stores)
  • yellow, green and blue food coloring
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 8 cups water

Make the fish eggs: bring 6 cups of water to a boil and add the tapioca pearls.

Reduce the heat slightly and boil the pearls, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes.

Color the eggs: divide the pearls, with the remaining water, between two bowls. Add 4 drops of food coloring (we used 3 drops of yellow and 1 drop of green in one bowl, and 4 drops of blue in the other) and 2 tablespoons of sugar to each bowl. Stir the mixtures, and then allow them to sit uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes. Drain and rinse the pearls with cold water.

Cocktail Ingredients:

  • 2 parts vodka
  • 1 part seltzer water
  • 2 parts lemonade
  • 8 gummy fish

Assembly:

Spoon 2 tablespoons of pearls (one from each color batch) into each glass and drop in a gummy fish.

Combine the vodka, lemonade and the seltzer separately and then add to the glass with the pearls and fish.

October 21: Purple Ghost

Well it IS purple-ish and makes you say “Oooooo”. Even with the juices this drink is not overly sweet.

Taste profile: sour, astringent, slight sweet undertones

Ingredients:

  • 3 parts cherry vodka (if you can’t find this just use vodka and some cherry juice)
  • 1 part cranberry juice
  • 1 part blue curacao
  • 1 part sweet & sour mix

Add all the ingredients into a shaker over crushed ice. Shake vigorously and then pour into a tall glass. Add a shot of seltzer for bubbles as an option.

Tastes of Terror – October 20

October 20: Pond Scum #18

Pond Scum is actually a series of drinks. Once upon a time I jokingly said that I would start at Pond Scum #100 and count down in versions until hitting #1 at which point the drink would be perfected. Many recipes have been lost to the drunken mists of time but here is one of the survivors that provided tasty results.

Taste profile: sweet with touches of bitter

Ingredients:

  • 1 part coffee liqueur
  • 1 part vodka
  • 1 part melon liqueur
  • 1 part orange juice
  • ½ part Dr. Pepper cola

Pour the coffee liqueur into the glass first; this is the mud at the bottom of your pond. Pour the remaining ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously then strain gently into the glass either using the side of the glass or over a spoon so as to not disturb the ‘mud’.

Do not stir in the glass when served. The ‘mud’ serves as a chaser to clear the palate from the fruit flavors.

Tastes of Terror – October 19

October 19: Satan

This drink embodies a very old fashioned feel mixing rich alcohols and bitters.

Taste profile: bitter, sweet

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¾ parts bourbon
  • ½ part sweet vermouth
  • ¼ part Pernod
  • 1 dash Peychaud bitters

Mix all ingredients in an Old Fashioned glass over ice and stir. I normally place my dash of bitters directly on the ice first and then pour the remaining ingredients to better mix the flavors.

October 18: Mexican Murder Scene

When you want a south of the border fiesta of murder, this is your cocktail.
Taste profile: sour with sweet on the rim like a Margarita

Making the blood:
• 1 cup corn syrup
• 10 drops red food coloring
• 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
Drizzle the blood around the rim of your glass and allow the blood to ooze down the inside before adding alcohol.

Cocktail Ingredients:
• 1 ½ parts tequila
• 1 part lemon juice
• 4 parts grapefruit soda
Build the cocktail in a separate glass or your shaker, and then gently add it to bloody glass by pouring it over a spoon.

October 17: Mad Scientist

When combined, this drink is an evil greenish yellow color with red oozing down; exactly what you expect to see in the mad scientist’s lair.

  • 1 part vodka
  • 1 part melon liqueur
  • 1 part margarita mix
  • 1 ½ parts pineapple juice

Tastes of Terror – October 16

October 16: Lady Death

I consider the cinnamon brandy to be the Lady Death who cuts through the sweet citrus flavors of life with a bite of the afterworld. This drink is a nice mixture of competing flavors that provide a lovely aftertaste.

Taste profile: sweet balance by sour with a touch of piquancy from cinnamon.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Grand Marnier
  • 1 part Cinnamon Brandy
  • 1 ½ parts lime juice
  • 1 ½ parts orange juice

Place all the ingredients into your shaker with ice. Shake it to the edge of death and strain into a rocks glass.

Tastes of Terror – October 15

October 15: Jersey Devil Cocktail

Nothing evokes the feel of the Mid-Atlantic region for Halloween like apple pie and the Jersey Devil.

Taste profile: sweet with some piquancy.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Apple Jack Brandy.
  • 1 part Cinnamon Schnapps.

Add the ingredients into a shaker with lump ice. Shake well, and strain into a Cocktail glass.

Tastes of Terror – October 14

October 14: Beast’s Breakfast

In appearance this drink is reminiscent of an inverted Tequila Sunrise with bubbles.

Taste profile: sweet with a hint of sour and astringent

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts rum
  • 1 part orange juice, not from concentrate
  • 1 part unsweetened pineapple juice
  • 1 part ginger ale
  • ¼ part cranberry juice concentrate (or grenadine)

In your trusty shaker filled with ice, mix rum, orange juice and pineapple juice and shake as if trying to wake the dead.

Pour this mixture into your glass until it is 2/3 full.

Fill the remainder of the glass with ginger ale.

Drizzle with the cranberry juice concentrate (or grenadine) to provide a diffusing blood effect. Cranberry is preferred for the flavor but grenadine will suffice in a pinch.

Tastes of Terror – October 13

October 13: Heart of Darkness

This drink is a fun science experiment to wow drinkers. When mixed in front of them, it’s a fun surprise to see orange and grape sodas transform into an inky black drink. You may need to experiment with different brands as some sodas, while clearly purple and orange, create more of a muddy color than black.

The trick to this drink is that the orange and grape sodas MUST be orange and purple, not just flavored appropriately.

Taste profile: sweet

Ingredients:

  • 1 part rum
  • ½ part whiskey
  • 2 parts orange soda – it must be orange colored and flavored
  • 2 parts grape soda – it must be purple colored

Build the drink in your glass over ice. I recommend adding alcohol first and then pouring the two sodas simultaneously to perform a lovely science experiment for your guest.
