Tastes of Terror – October 12

October 12: Green Snatcher

This drink is more yellow than green but who am I to argue, I merely provide what better bartenders than I have designed. Perhaps the Green Snatcher name comes from grabbing onto the grass after having too many.

Taste profile: sour and astringent with a bit of sweet to balance it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ parts Galliano
  • fill with tonic
  • squirt of lime juice

Pour all the ingredients into an old fashioned glass over ice; stir and serve.

October 11: Gothic Punch

Having guests? This punch is designed to serve up to 10 people.

Taste profile: primarily sweet with a bit of sour

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle (750ml) Grand Marnier
  • 4 quarts grape juice
  • 1 bottle (750ml) Claret
  • 3 oranges or 1 pineapple, cut up.
  • 10 tbsp sugar
  • 1 bottle (750ml) Champagne

I recommend that first you combine the sugar with the grape juice and stir until the sugar is dissolved. If you try this after it is added to the punchbowl, the ice will impede your ability to dissolve the sugar. Once the sugar is dissolved, mix all the liquids in a large punch bowl over ice and allow to stand for at least half an hour to fully chill.

Then add one bottle (750ml) of your favorite champagne and serve.

October 10: Floating Ghost

This is basically an Ice Cream Float for those of us who prefer liquor instead of straight soda.

Taste profile: sweet with the slightest hint of bitter from the coffee liqueur.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part dark rum
  • 1 part coffee liqueur
  • 1 part seltzer
  • 1 tbsp vanilla ice cream

Use a glass that has a bit more size than the volume of liquid to allow for the displacement of liquid when you add ice cream.

Place the alcohols into a glass and stir. Add the seltzer to give it a bit of life. Finally, float 1 tbsp vanilla ice cream (or better yet: scoop the ice cream using a melon baller to make it ball shaped to be your ‘ghost’).

October 9: Floating Brain

This is an old standby that takes a steady hand to build correctly. Even if you never get the brain to look right, it’s still a fun drink.

Taste profile: sweet with just a touch of sour in the background.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part clear liquor (usually a schnapps)
  • ¼ teaspoon lime juice per part clear liquor.
  • 1 part Irish cream
  • 1 or 2 dashes of grenadine around the brain

Place the clear liquor and juice in a shaker with ice and shake until very cold. Strain into a rocks glass. Add the grenadine and allow it to sink to the bottom like blood.

There are two ways to make the brain. The lazy man’s way is to gently layer it on top of the liquor and then hit it the center with another dash of grenadine. The more traditional, and slightly more time consuming way is to draw the Irish cream up into a straw and insert it gently into the middle of the clear liquid to form a floating brain. You can either add more grenadine through the straw or not as preferred with this method.

October 8: Diarrhea Draught

This has to be the most poorly named cocktail in existence. Frankly, just going by the name, I’d never have ordered it. But it is a real cocktail from the early 1900s and is actually rather tasty although some would find the fruit flavors cloying.

The drink is designed to be served at room temperature but the brandies could be warmed for an aromatic hot drink on a cold dark night.

Taste profile: sweet with a touch of bitter

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Blackberry Brandy.
  • 1 part Peach Brandy.
  • 2 dashes Jamaica Ginger extract.
  • Nutmeg.

Combine the brandies and ginger extract in your glass; grate nutmeg on top (or sprinkle ground nutmeg if you don’t have the nut) and serve.

Tastes of Terror – October 7

October 7: Devil’s Cocktail

Some people prefer this over ice; others like it warmer without adding ice, exactly like it would be served to old Scratch himself.

Taste profile: sour and astringent with a touch of sweetness to make it palatable.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part port
  • 1 part dry vermouth
  • ½ tsp lemon juice

Add ice, or not as you desire to the glass. Pour all the ingredients into the glass and stir to combine.

Tastes of Terror – October 6

October 6: Devil’s Blood

This drink is a bit complicated in construction but well worth it for the presentation.

Taste profile: primarily sour and astringent with a touch of sweet.

Ingredients:

  • Sugared rim with black or red sugar.
  • 2 parts vodka with 1 or 2 drops of black food coloring to make it black – or simply purchase one of the many fine black vodkas on the market.
  • 3 parts Chilled cranberry syrup.

Making the Cranberry syrup:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • ½ cup cranberry juice

Combine the sugar and water. Heat on medium until the sugar is dissolved and then lower the heat and cook until the mixture starts to thicken. Cool to room temperature and Mix in the cranberry juice. Chill until it’s as thick as a corpse’s blood.

Making the black or red sugar:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • Black or red food coloring

Add several drops and mix the color into the sugar and mix with a silicone spatula. Continue adding several drops at a time until you achieve a smooth color.

Assemble:

Moisten the rim of the glass and dip it in the bowl with sugar to coat the rim. Fill with ice, add the cranberry syrup and allow it to settle for a moment. Then gently layer the vodka by pouring it slowly into the glass over the back of a spoon.

Tastes of Terror – October 5

October 5: Delusion

This one is not for everyone. The mix of apricot and mint can be overwhelming to someone who does not already like those flavors. The lime juice keeps the sweetness from becoming overpowering and ties the other flavors together. Who knows, with a mix like this, you might start suffering delusions after a few.

Taste profile: mostly sweet with a touch of sour.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part Lime Juice.
  • 2 parts white Creme de Menthe.
  • 2 parts Apricot Brandy.

Add all ingredients into a shaker with shaved ice. Shake well; strain into a thin stemmed glass and serve.

October 4: Corpse Reviver

A nice, slightly sweet, citrus drink that’s a welcome change from all the cloyingly sweet Halloween libations out there. This drink is a bit more stylish and benefits from presentation with a champagne flute, wine glass, or other stylish glass.

Taste profile: sweet, with a dash of sour to balance the sweetness.

Ingredients:

  • 1 part brandy
  • 1 part orange juice
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • 2 dashes grenadine

Pour all the above ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a glass and then fill with your favorite Champagne.

October 3rd – Blue Ghost

This is a pretty drink with a bright blue color that’s light on the palate. To
really jazz up the presentation, obtain a blue glow stick, activate it and use it
as a swizzle stick to add an ethereal glow to your drink.
You can also impale a marshmallow on the glow stick as a ghost.

Taste profile: sour, balanced by sweet

Ingredients:
– 2 parts Vodka
– 1 part lime juice
– 1 part Blue Curacao
– 4 parts Sprite™ or 7up™ or other lemon lime soda.

Pour the vodka, lime and Curacao into a shaker with ice. Shake like your
life depends on it. Add to your glass and fil with the soda
